Static or editable QR code?
Fixed codes hold your content; editable codes hold a short link you can repoint.
A static code holds your content
A static, or fixed, code stores your link, Wi-Fi details or contact card in the pattern. Phones read it directly; it works without a QR service as long as the print lasts.
Changing its destination needs a new print. Our free QR code maker needs no account: website link, Wi-Fi, contact card and more. A WhatsApp chat code opens a chat with your number.
An editable code holds a short link
An editable, or dynamic, code holds a short link such as ovbq.com/BCD234. Our server sends scans to your page. Saving a destination updates every printed copy's link. Saved pauses and access restrictions still apply.
Each scan passes through ovbq, so editable codes can count scans and show when they happen. They need a free account. Besides web pages, on Pro and Business they can open a call, text, email, or hosted page or file, such as a contact card, menu page or a PDF. Restaurants: how to make a QR code menu.

When a fixed code is enough
- The content will not change, like a permanent address or a page that will stay put.
- Wi-Fi. Phones join a network only from the details inside the code, so a Wi-Fi code is always fixed. If you change the password, print a new code.
- A contact card whose details rarely change.
- A short-lived print, like a meeting handout that costs almost nothing to reprint.
- You want no service in the middle, ours or anyone's.
When an editable code is worth it
- The print is expensive or hard to replace: signs, packaging, vehicle graphics, engraved plates.
- The page will change: menus, property listings, event pages, seasonal offers.
- You want to know if anyone scans it, and when.
- Mistakes happen. A fixed code keeps a typo; with an editable code, fix the link.
The honest trade-off
Editable codes need our service running and your code switched on. We limit that risk:
- If your paid plan ends, after the 30-day grace period, your 2 oldest website-link codes stay on Free, live or paused as you left them. Other codes show a notice; any continue action follows the code's access restrictions. Exceptions are listed in Terms section 13. See what happens if you stop paying.
- On every plan, download a list of your short links and their destinations.
- If ovbq shuts down, we email you at least 90 days ahead. During that notice period, saved pauses, access restrictions and the exceptions in Terms section 13 still apply. See Terms section 14 for the shutdown promise.
