How to add a logo or icon to a QR code
A central logo helps people recognize whose QR code it is before scanning. Add one of our icons or your own file.
Add a logo on the free QR code maker
On the home page, logos are free on every fixed code, with no account.
- Fill out the form for your code.
- Under Add a logo, pick an icon or your own file. There are 16 icons, such as a globe, Wi-Fi, a phone, a fork and knife, and a coffee cup. The one that fits your type of code comes first and is marked "Suggested", and it is drawn in your code's color. Your own file can be a PNG or JPEG that is 1 MB or smaller.
- Pick a logo size: Small, Medium or Large (see the table).
- Check the preview and the print checker, then download your code.
The logo sits on a plain square, so its edges don't blend into the dots.
The sizes we allow
| Logo size | How much of the code's width it covers |
|---|---|
| Small | About 15% |
| Medium | About 20% |
| Large | About 25%, the most we allow |
On a dense code, the logo is limited to 20%. More content means more, smaller dots. Phones rely on small guide marks throughout the pattern, some near the middle; our scan tests showed larger logos failing there. The maker says: "This code is dense, so the logo is limited to 20% to keep it scannable." To use a larger logo, make the content shorter. An editable code is a good way to do that, because it holds only a short link.
Why a logo makes the code stronger
Every QR code has a strength level (error correction), so phones can read it despite covered or damaged parts. A logo covers part of the code, so we raise its strength:
- With any logo, the code uses at least High strength.
- With a large logo on a small code, it uses Highest.
- You can still pick Low or Medium, but with a logo they're raised to High automatically.
Higher strength packs more dots into the same space, so each dot is smaller at the same print size. The print checker takes this into account. Before you print many, print one copy at its final size and scan it with two different phones.
Logos on editable codes
On editable codes, logos come with the Pro and Business plans. On Free, editable codes are black on white, with no logo. Sign in, open the code, pick an icon or your own file and a size, and save. Files follow the same rules as on the home page, and you can upload up to 30 logos an hour.
Your logo shows in the preview, the PNG, SVG, PDF and EPS downloads, the print sheet and the thumbnail on your dashboard. We redraw your file from its pixels, so none of its hidden details, such as camera or location data, are kept.
- If you move to Free, we keep your logo but don't show it. It comes back when you're on Pro or Business again. To delete it for good, choose No logo and save.
- If a code is paused because your plan ended, it keeps its logo, but the logo isn't shown while it's paused. See what happens if you stop paying.
- When you delete a code, its logo is deleted at once.
"Make it editable" on the home page carries over only the link and its strength, not the colors or the logo. If you like your fixed code's look, download it first, then add the logo on the editable code's page.
