A WhatsApp QR code that opens a chat with you

A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with your business number when someone scans it, with a message ready to send if you like. A fixed code is free, with no account. Here's where people use one, what happens when someone scans, and what to do if your number changes.

Where people use a WhatsApp code

  • Shop windows and counters, with "Message us on WhatsApp."
  • Receipts, invoices and packaging, with "Questions about your order? Message us."
  • Vans and yard signs, with "Send us a photo for a quote."
  • Business cards, with "Message me on WhatsApp." See QR codes for business cards.
  • Rental doors and house guides, with "Questions? Message your host."

Print a few words with the code so people know what it opens.

What happens when someone scans

On a phone with WhatsApp, the scan opens a chat with your number. If you added a message, it's already typed in. The person can change it, and nothing is sent until they press send. A phone without WhatsApp shows a page from WhatsApp instead.

Add a message people can send as it is

The message is optional. A good one is short and says what the person wants, like "Hi, I'd like a quote." You can use up to 300 characters, and a short message makes a code that's easier to scan.

Make one code for each place, each with its own message, and the message tells you where they scanned. They can change the text, so treat it as a hint, not an exact count.

Fixed or editable?

The free WhatsApp chat code is a fixed code. It holds your number, so it is free, needs no account and doesn't expire. It can't be changed after printing, and it doesn't count scans.

If your number might change, make an editable code with a free account and point it at your WhatsApp link. Change the link later, and future scans follow the saved link when the code is allowed to open. You also see how many times it was scanned. An editable code keeps your link, and the number in it, on ovbq. A free account includes 2 editable codes. The guide shows how to make that link. For the difference in general, see fixed or editable, and what happens if you stop paying.

Print it big enough

In the hand, a code needs at least 1.2 in (3 cm). On a counter, at least 1.8 in (4.5 cm). On a wall or window, at least 7.1 in (18 cm). Keep the plain border. How big should a QR code be? has the full chart.

Who can see your number

Anyone who scans this code can see this number and message, and so can anyone who gets a picture of it. Use a business number, not your personal one. A printed code can't be changed. We don't save what you type into the free maker. If you have a WhatsApp Business account, its app can make a short link that hides your number.

Make your WhatsApp code

On our home page, choose WhatsApp chat, type your number and add a message if you like. Then add your colors or a logo, check the size, and download it. How to make a WhatsApp QR code goes through each step.

Spaces, dashes and parentheses are fine. For a UK number, leave out the 0 at the start and add +44.
