Password protected QR code: ask before it opens

Ask for a shared password before protected content opens through an editable code.

How the password works

Yes, on Pro and Business. Set a password for the code and share it with the people you want to let through. You can replace or remove it from the code's page. Use a password you do not use for an account.

People who scan the code see a page asking for the password. The password is checked each time you open protected content through this code. If you open protected content again or request a separate file or contact download, you must enter the code's password again. If too many wrong passwords are tried from the same network, the code asks people to wait an hour.

Someone who opens the destination may share its address or a copy, so the destination keeps its own access rules. Changing a password does not take back downloaded copies. Any pause or opening dates still apply.

If your plan ends, no longer includes passwords, or password settings become unavailable, a saved password still applies. You can remove it. Setting or replacing a password needs an eligible plan and available password settings.

How to set a password on a QR code.

Set a password

  1. Open the code from your dashboard.
  2. Find Password for this code.
  3. Under Set a password, type the password, then choose Save password.
  4. Share the password with the people you want to let through.

Use a password you do not use for an account. Up to 72 characters, fewer if you use accented letters, emoji or some symbols. Spaces count as part of the password.

Replace or remove a password

Open the code's page, enter a new password under Replace the password, then choose Replace password. The saved password is never shown again. If you forget it, set a new one.

To stop asking, choose Remove password, then confirm. Keep password is the first choice on the confirmation page. Removing the password leaves any dates, pauses or other restrictions in place.

Passwords, dates and rules

A password asks for shared knowledge. It does not verify who someone is or hide an unprotected destination. It does not encrypt a destination or prevent someone from sharing its address or a downloaded copy.

Start and end dates choose when the code may open. Outside its dates, the code shows a notice before a password prompt.

Rules for links choose between destinations after any password and date checks. Browser hints can be missing or wrong.
